Pramono Pushes Collaboration to Improve Jakarta Waste Management

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has reaffirmed the Jakarta Provincial Government's commitment to accelerating comprehensive waste management.

Requires commitment from everyone

Pramono made the statement while delivering a keynote speech at the Local Hero Indonesia Forum 2026 at Grha Ali Sadikin, Jakarta City Hall, on Monday (8/31).

Pramono said Jakarta produces more than 9,000 tons of waste each day, with organic waste making up 49.87 percent and plastic waste accounting for 22.95 percent.

"This is our problem, and as we all know, since August 1, Jakarta has only been able to send its residual waste to Bantargebang," he emphasized.

Jakarta is moving away from a collect-and-dispose model toward sorting, collecting, and processing waste. However, the approach requires commitment from everyone.

Since Governor's Instruction (Ingub) No. 5/2026 was issued, Pramono said the amount of waste sent to Bantargebang has fallen by more than 500 tons per day.

He noted that more households are now sorting their waste. Since the campaign began on May 10, 2026, the share of households sorting their waste has risen from 5.31 percent to 23.14 percent.

"Also important is organic waste management, which was previously carried out through 2,247 waste banks. The amount of organic waste managed has increased from 1,046 tons to 1,432 tons," he added.

The governor stressed that consistency and commitment are key to the success of the waste-sorting movement. In addition to the initiative, Jakarta has waste management facilities such as the Rorotan RDF Plant and 3R Waste Processing Sites, and plans to build waste-to-energy plants at three locations.

The Jakarta Provincial Government is also open to partnerships with the private sector to manage waste.

"Because we cannot tackle the waste problem alone," Pramono asserted.

At the event, the governor also praised the Local Hero Indonesia Forum 2026, which carries the theme "From Campaign to Collaboration: Strengthening Multi-Stakeholder Partnership for Sustainable Waste Management".

Indonesia Water Institute Founder and Chairman Firdaus Ali said the institute has launched the 'Merdeka dari Sampah' campaign through the Local Hero Recycle Challenge. The campaign encourages people to take simple steps to manage waste at home.

"One way is to reuse and recycle items that are no longer in use but still have economic value," he highlighted.

A total of 191 entries from across the country were submitted to the Local Hero Recycle Challenge. Participants came from various backgrounds, including students, teachers, homemakers, neighborhood groups, and small-business owners.

"Through this initiative, we can see that people are actually willing to take action and do something for our environment," he said.

Through the forum, the Indonesia Water Institute hopes to continue community-led efforts through various forms of collaboration. Firdaus said he hopes these efforts can change the way people manage waste.

Firdaus also praised the local heroes who have contributed to waste management, emphasizing that change can start with even the smallest actions.

"Through this forum, we want to take these efforts further by bringing different stakeholders together to promote collaboration that can continue," he said.
